Diode LED

Alternating Current (AC): Electric power is generated and delivered to businesses and residences in a high-voltage alternating current (AC), in which the flow of electricity periodically reverses directions.

CRI (Color Rendering Index): A quantitative value that depicts the LED fixture’s ability to reproduce colors accurately compared to a natural light source (i.e. the Sun). With higher CRI colors are rendered more accurate, richer, and deeper.

Correlated Color Temperature (CCT): A quantifiable measure of both the hue in white light and where it falls on the color spectrum. If a white light fixture is more yellow in hue, it is considered “warm white.” If the hue is bluer, the light is considered “cool white.” Correlated Color Temperature is expressed using Kelvin (K) as the unit of measure for white light.

CE: Abbreviation for European Community. CE certifies that a product has met European Union consumer safety, health, or environmental requirements.

Class 2: The National Electric Code (NEC) defines a Class 2 circuit as that portion of the wiring system between the load side of a Class 2 power supply (LED driver) and the connected equipment (LED Luminaire). A Class 2 compliant circuit is considered safe from fire initiation, and provides protection from electrical shock.

Constant Voltage: Refers to a power supply that maintains a fixed voltage output regardless of current load.

Current (A): The flow of electric charge. In electric circuits, moving electrons in a wire often carry current. The unit used for measuring current is the “ampere (A),” or commonly used “amps”.

DC: Abbreviation for Direct Current, in which the flow of electric charge moves in only one direction.

DMX: Abbreviation for Digital Multiplex. DMX is a standard for digital communication used to control lighting and lighting effects. DMX is used to synchronize and control multiple LED lights and color changing LED lighting with a single controller. DMX signaling allows connection of various supporting equipment to a DMX controller to expand to multiple lighting areas or to layouts covering great distances.

Energy Star: ENERGY STAR was started by the EPA in 1992 as a market-based partnership to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency. To qualify for the ENERGY STAR label an LED lamp must use up to 75% less energy and last at least 15 times longer than comparable incandescent lighting. In order to earn the ENERGY STAR label, LED lighting products must be third-party certified based on EPA-recognized testing in laboratories and demonstrate the following characteristics:

• Brightness is equal to or greater than existing lighting technologies
• Light output remains constant over time
• Excellent color quality
• Efficiency is as good as or better than fluorescent lighting

IP Rating: Abbreviation for Ingress Protection Rating which classifies and rates the degree of protection provided against particle intrusion such as dust and water.

First Digit (Intrusion Protection)
0
No special protection
1
Protection against solid obejects up to 50 mm in diameter
2
Protection against solid obejects up to 12 mm in diameter
3
Protection against solid obejects over 2.5 mm in diameter
4
Protection against solid obejects over 1 mm in diameter
5
Protection against dust
6
Completely dust tight

Second Digit (Moisture Protection)
0
No protection
1
Protection against condensation
2
Prtotection against water droplets up to 15° from vertical
3
Protected against spray deflected up to 60° from vertical
4
Protected against water spray from all directions
5
Protected against low-pressure ater jets (all directions)
6
Protected against string water jets and waves
7
Protected against temporary immersion
8
Protected against prolonged effects of immersion under pressure

(K): Kelvin is the unit of measure describing color temperature. This value indicates where the hue of a white light falls on the color spectrum. A lower number indicates a warmer or more yellow temperature, while higher number indicates a cooler light closer to blue.

LED: Abbreviation for Light Emitting Diode, which is a semiconductor light source sometimes referred to as solid state lighting. LEDs are used in many devices and are increasingly used for general and commercial lighting.

Lumen (lm): The unit of measure for the brightness of a light, indicating the amount of light emitted.

Luminous Efficacy: The measure of how efficiently a light source produces light. The simplest way of configuring this is by determining the lumens per watt.

Luminous Flux: In photometry, luminous flux or luminous power is the measure of the perceived power of light.

Nanometer (nm): Unit of length which is one billionth of a meter. This value is associated with the wavelengths of light in the visible spectrum. A typical human eye will respond to wavelengths from about 390 to 700 nm, which are the colors of the rainbow.

RGB: (“Red, Green, Blue”) Full-color LED fixtures use Additive Color Mixing with combinations of these three color diodes to produce millions of colors.

RGBW: (“Red, Green, Blue, White”) Expanding upon RGB color mixing, the addition of white light enables a broader range of color combinations to include pastels as well as brighter light.

RoHS: Restriction on the use of certain Hazardous Substances (RoHS) places limits on hazardous heavy metals in electronic devices for environmental safety. RoHS directive took effect in the European Union on July 1, 2006. California adopted the RoHS regulations which took effect on January 1, 2007. Other states are expected to follow suit in adopting RoHS over time.

RU: The Recognized Component Mark is a type of quality mark issued by Underwriters Laboratories and is specifically used on components that when combined with other equipment can be used to create a UL recognized system.

SMD: Abbreviation for Surface Mount Device is a method for producing electronic circuits in which the components such as LEDs are mounted or placed directly onto the surface of printed circuit boards (PCBs).

Title 24: Title 24 certification meets code regulations designed to reduce energy consumption and enhance energy efficiency of buildings in California. Energy efficient lighting fixtures can be tested and approved for Title 24 projects by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL).

UL: Underwriters Laboratories (UL) is a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL). UL is a leader in product safety testing and certification, where numerous manufacturers have had merchandise evaluated and tested for safety. This certification mark indicates that the product has been tested to and has met the minimum requirements for product safety and the manufacturing site is regularly audited.

Watt (W): A Watt measures the rate of energy conversion or power used. LED fixtures consume power measured in watts.
